This is a typical oil painting which I find both satisfying to paint and live with. The composition is clean and has direction; the light and the colours are strong and the makes an impact. In a room, it never simply becomes part of the wallpaper, but attracts the eye.
Although clearly representational, the painting does not try to mimic a photograph, nor merely be an impression, but to be almost tangible. The feeling of solidity comes from the light and the consequent shadows. If there is an analogy, it is to a cast-iron stove in a kitchen. Its presence is real and unfussy. It fits in to its environment and does a job.
As a contrast to the controlled structure of these oils, I invariably paint miniatures of the same subject, in oil on blocks of oak or maple or other dense wood in a looser style using the wood colour and grain as integral element.
